About Deborah

The Picture House started as an online art gallery about 10 years ago to display my work as a fine artist. I studied painting at Norwich School of art and graduated in 1998 with a first class degree. I have exhibited in galleries around the UK, have my work in both private & public collections and have won awards for my paintings. Architecture was often the subject of these oil paintings which were produced in a detailed and methodical way.

Then in 2006 an illness put a stop to me working in this way. I was diagnosed with Fibromyaliga and M.E. and couldn't hold up the brushes to paint. A year later I fell pregnant and in 2008 my daughter Celeste was born.

Instead of making meticulous paintings I found myself immersed in my child’s simple and direct version of the world - we were just making marks with paint and enjoying it. We also did collage (or sticking) & I produced a series of these in connection with a book I wrote and self published.
I also got involved with my daughter’s pre-school and ran several creative workshops with the little ones there. I enjoyed being around the children, their energy and excitement was uplifting.

Then one summer holiday I booked myself and my daughter into a mosaic making workshop. I took to this instantly. I felt excited and inspired by all the shiny pieces of patterned and coloured ceramic tiles & tesserae. They reminded me of my love for paint and soon replaced it in a less labour intensive way, but at the same time enabling me to work methodically and with the attention to detail that I like.

I am now a self employed mosaic artist, please see the gallery here for samples of my work or Contact Me if you would like a quote for a special commission.
